You certainly have a way of putting things, PANDORA, i.e., that no one would mistake a 50-year old for age 13. A lot of 50 types can get away with 35 or 40, though.

So, CASSANDRA, you have now reminded me that you and THE HUNK share a birthday - his is April 5, right? Is that yours, too, or is it another date in April? 50? THE HUNK will be 50! He wears it well.

To ALL: HAPPY NEW YEAR.

SYXX, you just must have a way with women.

Hi guys! Happy New Year!

My Kindergarten rugrat goes back to school this coming Monday. Yay!! She's starting to get bored with all this free time to play, etc.

Baby Ittot (Arren) is now 11 months old, and three days ago, took his first real steps! I don't care how many children you have, those firsts are always so cool!

PANDORA -- My mother was kind of like that. And I might be like that too, with my little girl. No way no how she's ever going to go out with boys. Never. ;-)

(waving madly) HI GOVT!!!

govt-plus one. He was shot and the ship was hit on the 14th, but he died and the ship went down on the 15. (it's also tax day, but I hate to bring that up-especially when I still have to go through all my bills and stuff from 2001 so that Mr. C can enter them into Quicken. As Bob Cratchit remarked, " I am behind my times..")

Happy New Year ITTOT! Kindergarten? Weren't you just researching pre-schools to send her to?! How are things going? Didn't your husband have something to do with Lord of the Rings? Have you seen it? I haven't heard anything bad about it yet. I just hope it stays in the theaters long enough for me to get in gear and go see it. (I bought the complete 1st season of Stargate SG1 on DVD and Mr. C and I have been watching a lot of TV lately) Great to see you here. Now, if we could only get mountainphile to come back...

Hi Cassandra!
No, unfortunately, Hubby Ittot did not work on LOTR:FOTR, but he did win an Emmy for working on the SciFi Channel "Frank Herbert's Dune" mini-series. He and his buddies are hoping to option some hot property or other...don't know the details. Hollywood is so back-biting and inefficient, it's a wonder *anything* good comes out of here.

Hasn't "Enterprise" become a disappointment? I wish they'd dump Brannon Braga (exec. prod.) out of the Star Trek Franchise. It's time for him to move on.

I haven't seen Lord of the Rings yet. It'll be out in the theaters for a while, I think, as long it's pulling in the $$$. I DID manage to see "Harry Potter & the S. Stone" with little Ittot (now 5 1/2). I think I was more excited than she was. I thought it was a terriffic adaptation of the book. The actors were wonderful, and though the effects were a little squonchy here and there, (when the kids are whizzing around on their brooms, mostly) as soon as it's out on DVD, I'm getting it. I think it's going to be a classic.

Hiya, ITTOT!

Have to agree with you on "Enterprise" I've tried and tried to "get into it" but I just can't connect. Except for the captain and the vulcan I cannot keep the characters straight - their personalities just aren't distinct enough. Contrast that with "Star Trek" and "ST:NG" and the lack of clearly defined characters in "Enterprise" is obvious. Besides, "Enterprise" has been into a gratuitous "skin show" that I find totally unnecessary and a big turn-off.

As for dating, well, govt jr. is the right age and I'm a real mother hen about it but she still goes out - but only if I know their exact plans, last names and phone numbers of all involved and that she's carrying her cell phone. I still spend the whole evening praying until she's safe at home again!

Yeah, the "Enterprise" emphasis on the actor's bodies is more than a bit much, and the directionlessness of their voyage is a let-down. There isn't a master Plan of exploration, which is something I think the entity that built this Enterprise would have. And the Captain (tho I love Backula) is a wooden character with no smarts...kind of like the Captain Leslie Neilsen played in "Forbidden Planet" in the 50's.

Less than a year ago Little Ittot had a run-in with the 8 yr old boy next door (we moved a month later) that was Children Services reportable - at least Mr Ittot threatened the little delinquent's parents with it if they didn't keep him away from her, so the word "sex" has more meaning than it should for a 5 year old girl. At least we're now in a great neighborhood with wonderful neighbors and kids her age, and we hope we've dealt with what happened in a way that's OK.

(shrug) In any case, Mr Ittot IS going to go nuts when she's older...don't know how he's going to handle his baby girl wanting some independence. (BG) He'll & I'll have to learn, I guess! Get out that shot-gun!

Just great everyone, now I feel soooo much more confident about my future...

This little piggie is not quite so optimistic about this new year. So far it's started with a non-stop rain for a whole week here in the Bay Area. Whooowee, I've been cooped up in my room for way too long. Especially with no X-files, I'm going into withdraw. Noooooo.

What is it about hormones during the teenage years that make our life sooooo hard? Literally for the male population. Agh, I feel like an emotional bomb ready to go off at any second. Am I the only one who hears the tick-tocking? And any good advice on socializing in college? I've been getting mixed messages on what to do in college. Some say have a great time at parties, others say study your ass off if you want to graduate. Of course there's my mom who, although still tells me "go to your room" insists that I should be making "friends," hint hint. Waaaaagh. *pulls hair out of frustration* When does it end?

Since you asked for advice, PANDORA, here's mine:

Try to strike a balance between your studies and enjoying the social aspects of college. You CAN do both. For me (and everyone has their own way), I always put the classes and homework first since that was the PRIMARY reason I was going to college. However, I did not do it to the neglect of new friends, social activities, athletic events, etc. If you carefully pick and choose your social events you will find there is time for them.

As far as school, 1) I made it a policy to NOT SKIP CLASSES unless I was truly sick - otherwise I ALWAYS went, and 2) I used time between classes, even it was just 1/2 hour or 45 minutes, to study. If I was diligent during the day it would free up some evening time.

I used the above method successfully in high school, college and law school.

pandora-I totally blew off my classes and had major fun during my freshman year. It was my first time away from home and my very restrictive parents. But, once I decided on a major everything changed. I started out as a music major and there is no way to get through that program if you skip classes or practicing. I think once you get a strong feeling about what you want to do, the motivation to succeed at it may just help give you the discipline you need to do it. I also had the pressure of paying for my own education. I knew lots of kids whose parents paid for everything and they were very irresponsible. Others had their finances tied to their GPA and that was a pressure as well. It really depends on what you want to do. (some careers require graduate degrees and your grades will determine what graduate school you will get into) Another important factor is, like in high school, who you hang out with. If you have friends who care about what they learn or how they do, then it will be easier to study. If you have friends who always blow off classes and party, then it will make it harder for you to stay in your room or go to the library.

syxx- I hereby withdraw any positive comments I may have made about the Rangers as they have been losing ever since. I now expect to watch their decline in the standings and am prepared to experience the usual angst of being a Rangers fan. Respectfully, cassandra

Pandora, I agree with both Govt and Cassandra. Your grades are very important and will be important to you in the future. And you also go to college to meet people, make friends who you will keep for the rest of your life, and learn a lot about yourself and the world. You have to find a balance between class, studying, and having fun.

I work at a university. We deal with students wanting to get into our grad program. A lot are perfectly good people with excellent careers. They want to go back to school to get into a higher management level. Some get in, some don't. The marks from their undergrad degree aren't high enough. Just try to keep your GPA above 3 - that'll be enough to get into grad school if you decide you want to do so 5 or 10 or even 20 years after you graduate.
