Hi all! Happy Holidays! Hope everyone has a wonderful 2005.
Life is busy and I would love to just sit and watch Buffy episodes all day or play with some of my Christmas "toys", but I must take advantage of this week that I have off to help my daughter get ready for her upcoming trip to Disney. I don't know if I mentioned this already, but she is taking a semester off from school to work at Disney World in their college program. I also scheduled her wisdom teeth removal for tomorrow so that I would be available to drive her and take care of her. It is nice to have her home and I am lucky that I have this week off to hang out with her. Let's hope for a peaceful new year! |

From Frank Spotnitz' blog at www.biglight.com:
Wednesday, January 05, 2005 X-FILES 2 (CONTD) Im sure you're probably tired of being asked about X-Files 2, but Im such a big fan of the show and the first movie that I just had to ask about it. I know that negotiations have been going on for quite some time, and a lot of buzz was going around about the movie, but its been a long time since we have heard anything. Is the project still in negotiations? Any news from you would be a wonderful gift for all the fans. Leslee Bishop, Texas Yes, negotiations are still continuing. I promise to post news of a deal here as soon as it closes (assuming it ever does!). Thanks for your support and patience. posted by Frank Spotnitz at 10:38 AM |

At this rate, the plot for "X-Files 2" will probably detail the murky concessions and conspiratorial deals it took to make the film.

Hi, all,
There sure has been a lot going on in the world since Christmas...the earthquake and tsuanmi topping the list. I, fortunately, do not know anyone personally who is missing. One of our judge's here in Hennepin County has a niece missing. I certainly hope all is well with each of you as we begin the new year. Resolutions, CASSANDRA? Well, to write here a little more often, for one! [This message has been edited by govtlawyer (edited 01-07-2005).] |

So, TRUSTNO1, I was just reading today's news about the Red Sox player who doesn't want to give back "THE baseball" from the last out of the World Series. That is a very interesting legal question -- who "owns" the ball. If a fan had it, doesn't the fan usually keep it? I don't know about players, though. I'd like to see that in court. Of course, from an ethical point of view, he should probably give it to the team. What's the buzz in Boston on this "controversy?"

Hi Govt,
Unfortunately the "Ballgate" has emerged during a dry period in Boston sports (the Patriots have a bye until the next playoff game, the Celtics are horrible, and the Bruins won't be playing again for 2 years), so the sports radio airwaves are teeming with conspiratorial theories about this ridiculous non-story. First off, the story originated from a well-known Boston columnist. In addition to being known far and wide as the author of "The Curse of the Bambino," he's also renowned as a colossal back stabber. So the story has to be taken within that context. In addition, Sox first basemen Doug Mientkiewicz (try spelling that one without double checking) was on the big sports radio station here today (can you tell I listen to way too much radio?) and he claims the comments in the original article -- especially the ones where he talked about the ball's potential value -- were taken out of context. Normally, I'd cry foul on this, but given the background of the writer, Mientkiewicz (henceforth to be referred to as "Minky") might have a leg to stand on. During his radio interview he said he'd be happy to lend the ball to the Sox and/or the Hall of Fame for any kind of display or fan event. The key word there is "lend." Legally, I'm not sure where this thing would go. When a fan catches a ball (be it foul or a home run), that ball becomes the property of the fan. From what I've heard, when a game ends, the last player to hold the ball can also become the ball's owner, but this is by no means set in stone. It's more tradition than anything else. It's a weird situation because "famous" baseballs are generally associated with specific players. A 3,000 hit, a 70th home run, a no hitter, etc. In this case you're dealing with a ball that represents the first championship for a TEAM in 86 years. Personally, I think Minky should be able to hold on to the ball and lend it out for exhibits, etc. (Just like benefactors do with famous paintings in museums). It's a shame this is a story at all. The Red Sox won their first world series in 86 years. The Patriots have won 2 out of the last 3 Super Bowls. Yet this is what Boston is talking about? Ridiculous. |

Yes, but I am enjoying the story from a legal POV. I didn't know about the tradition of the last ballplayer with the ball keeps the ball. I dunno -- do you think all the other Red Sox will be mad at him -- or will tradition override because next time they might be the lucky person with "The Ball"?
BTW, what are you doing these days -- besides the Forum, that is? |

I doubt the players care all that much. The big deal was winning the thing. The paraphernalia surrounding the event probably doesn't figure in. Now, if a fellow player was pilphering their World Series rings, then I think there'd be a showdown.
As for me and my incredibly exciting life. I'm working for myself these days, which is absolutely fantastic. I teach a few classes at Emerson, I do consultation work for a couple of clients (Web-based stuff) and I've been pouring more time into Filmfodder. My hope is to head back to school (yes, again) to get an education/teaching degree so I can teach on the high school level. And how are you these days? Any more engagement bombshells? |

Warning: Self Promotion Ahead
I'm not sure if anyone in here has been watching "Lost," but if you're interested in the show you may also enjoy the episode reviews I've been assembling as part of Filmfodder's "Lost" Blog. They're kinda similar to the old reviews I used to whip up for the "X-files." |

It sounds like your life IS exciting, TRUST, and full of interesting things. Any babies on the way, yet?
And, no, no more engagement bombshells for us. Since gov't jr. is our only one -- and I can't ever see her changing her mind about "the guy" -- we'll have to be "content" with that. No date has been set yet -- maybe the summer of 2006, though. CASSANDRA, what is the Disney program Cass Jr. is doing? |
|||
|
|
Wicked Awesome Member |
govt- I am a firm believer in long engagements, so I'm glad to hear about the summer '06 date. My daughter still hasn't really had a significant relationship, beyond really close friendships with both genders, so I have yet to experience the liking or not liking of whoever she is with or worrying that she is spending too much time with anyone.
I don't have time to write too much right now, but the Disney program is like a paid internship and they stay in a dorm-like apartment complex, but it is more like real life than school in that they get a paycheck and have to pay rent and for all their meals and other expenses. (except utilities-thank goodness!) They don't make a lot of money, there are classes you can take (but most colleges don't accept them for credit) but apparently it looks good on a resume because businesses respect the Disney company and its higher expectations and demands for professionalism. Will write more when I return from Florida next week. I know XQQ doesn't check in here anymore, but yesterday was her birthday, so Happy Birthday XQQ! And since I won't be here on the 18th, Happy Early Birthday to Trust and to the Forum!! I believe we are turning 7!! (and Trust.....is it the big 3-0 yet?) |

Wow, Cass, you've got an excellent memory.
You are correct on both counts -- the forum will be 7 and I'm going to be 30. The end is nigh |
