Up early, CASSANDRA. GovtJr. is a senior - !!!!! How'd that happen? We've already been to 3 art schools; one in Portland and two in Minneapolis. No decisions yet.

"Voir dire" ARGO, but you were VERY close. Attorneys are nuts. Often it seems they only want people on juries who don't anything about anything.

govt- a senior! This forum is going to have to live on indefinitely- I promise to be there for you when she goes away to school-and you will have to do the same the next year for me! As parents of onlies we will be navigating the same difficult terrain. Mr.C and I just look at each other sometimes when she talks about going to school "anywhere but VA"-and it's not just the money part that we're thinking about. (although she may have no choice if our college and retirement funds keep diminishing in this economy!)
argo- I know you don't mind spoilers, but in case someone else does:
This is what I read about 24 in TV Guide.

It is 1 year later. Palmer is president and calls Jack for help with something (?). He and his daughter are pretty much estranged and Nina does not appear until the 5th episode!!! They are also introducing a new female character as a love interest for the widowed Jack. That's all I know.
BTW, what band?

Thanks, Cassandra. Having a new 24 almost ... almost (not quite) ... makes up for no X-Files season premiere to wrap up a cliff-hanger over the summer.

I saw Dave Matthews Band at Sandstone (Kansas City)on Tuesday. It's the second live concert of theirs I've seen, they are a great live band.

argo
(back home again, but this time they lost my luggage)

Cassandra, your daughter will make friends with whom she chooses. When I was in high school, the "brains" were usually ostracized. But it's different today. Good marks are very important to getting into any college. Jr will find her way.

Am looking forward to the new '24' too. Very little has caught my eye for the new season -not much to look forward to. Today's paper had a little feature on Kiefer Sutherland and him appreciating the good things that have happened to him because of the show.

Other than that, busy at work. The good boss is leaving at the end of the week (moving across the country to take up a new job). I'm stuck with someone who hasn't a clue what is going on. Part of her job was posted as a temporary position, but I really can't take it - doubt I'd get it and doubt I could cut a deal to get me back to my current one at the end of the term. It's not a good situation. I'm mostly qualified but no one thought that hey, maybe *I* could take on some higher duties. Natch, of course not.

Welcome back x-ed! It's been awhile. I'm actually happy that there are not too many shows I'm interested in . I already watch too much TV. I have been watching a couple of new shows on cable now and then; The Dead Zone and Monk. I know your TV is different-do you get these? Do you still get Stargate? (it moved from Showtime to Sci-Fi a few months ago) I will probably try Joss Whedon's new show, Firefly-only because I like his writing so much on Buffy.
Sorry about your job situation. It's really a drag to know more than someone who is in a "superior" position. I've worked for some incompetent principals and the best I could hope for was that they left me alone to do my own thing; it's when they tried to get me to do things that I didn't like (like handing in my plans weeks in advance) that it got really annoying. ( I would just make stuff up!) Hope it doesn't get too stressful.

x-phile-queen: 24 (on Fox, Tuesday nights, although I don't think they've been airing summer repeats-except for the marathon they did on FX)

*tee hee* BELIEVE ME! I WILL need a support group when govtjr.----- goes away! AGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! Oh, sure, I think about how the mornings will have less hassle in the bathrooms, etc. etc., but, I know I will miss all that. It will be too quiet! Not that she's noisy, it's just that she won't BE there. And, I LIKE having her around.

Cassandra, we get Stargate. We're a little behind. I don't even know if we got last season's finale. We had the one with Daniel being written out and becoming one of those white alien things, and then we had another ep the following week (back in July) and have had reruns since. Maybe they'll show the finale before we get the new season. Unless that non-finale ep was the finale?

If you watch Farscape, we have now made it to Season 3! I have been enjoying it. Scorpius has grown on me.

That goes for me, too. I wish CSI hadn't been so successful as to have CSI:Miami pop up. Looks like this new season I'll get my fill of criminal forensics. I did catch an ep of "Monk" and wasn't completely grabbed by it. Guess I still have loyalties toward "Colombo". Don't think I'll get started on any of the "doctor" shows nor any sit-coms.
My one enduring addiction over the last couple of years though has been "Battlebots".

It is a sobering day today. In the plaza outside the Government Center where I work, and with the Minneapolis City Hall (built in the 1880s as a backdrop), they raised a giant flag by using two ladder trucks from the Minneapolis Fire Department. The sky is blue, the sun is shining, the air is clean - just like it was a year ago.

The sun is shining here too, Govt. A beautiful late summer/early fall day. Just like a year ago.

My thoughts are with you all down in the US.

Weren't some Canadian citizens lost in all of this, XEDOUT? I admit, I don't remember, just that people were from many nations. Also, there was a documentary on TV here, that I unfortunately had to miss, but it was about the hospitality of the Canadians for stranded U.S. citizens when the planes were diverted to Canada.

Govt, I think around 20 or 30 were lost in that day's events. Many others from many other nations too.

Lots of memorials in Canada today to honour the victims and remember what happened last year. Lots of people who were diverted to Canada last year were also supposed to be coming back for various memorials.

If the same thing happened in Canada, I'm fairly sure the US would have also opened its doors to stranded travellers.

OK-it's getting awfully quiet here. I have nothing in particular to write about, but I didn't like seeing 9-11 as the last posting date.
wolfie- did you buy Beck's latest CD? (Sea Change I think it's called) Do you like it?
syxx- you must be happy, football season has started. I don't know what's changed for me, but for some reason I don't hate it as much as I used to. Perhaps living with someone who has watched Sunday football games for 22 years does that to a person.
That's it for now. Hi to everyone and I hope you are all well.

I've been here - just haven't posted. Don't know if anyone's interested in the crap at work I'm dealing with. I was appalled at the lousy way the director of the program treated my now-departed to a better job supervisor and former assistant director. Treating her like she was dead for the past few weeks. Completely reprehensible professional behaviour. If you don't like someone personally, fine; you're entitled to your opinion.

Didn't apply for the replacement position. Didn't know if I wanted it and didn't know if I wanted to deal with his duplicity and worse. He tells you things he wants to hear, makes bad decisions, keeps you out of the loop, etc. I couldn't figure out if putting up with the garbage was worth about $200 a month more than I make now.

Interviews are this week. I had a heck of a time even looking at the resumes of the applicants. I must have asked at least a half dozen times - being on the selection committee I thought that you know, you should see who applied. He picked some good choices for "his" idea of who should be hired, but some were pretty questionable. One was a summer student here who maybe has a year experience total, lives at home with mom and dad, isn't even old enough to get into the program, and basically would be a fish out of water. Great great choice.

Sorry for ranting.

After watching "Fire" on FX Wednesday night, I have *finally* seen every episode! That ep must have made the shippers crazy. I am really enjoying some of these season 1 eps again-especially the banter between Mulder and Scully. Hopefully, the price on the complete season DVDs will come down some day.

cassandra-It's OK to like football. They don't have many class acts like Manny Ramirez, but at least if your team is in the toilet you don't have to suffer for 7 months.

Does anyone really need the DVD sets after season 5? Even season 5 is iffy, but I'd probably still buy it.

Yep, I'm not one of those people who roots for and wishes luck to the team that beats my team. I want them to go down in a humiliating fireball of failure. I have nothing against the Red Sox, but they are guilty by association with the Patriots. But it's all in good fun, and after watching the Steelers choke away a Super Bowl spot 3 times in 7 years my ammo is running thin.

1918? Okay, DC and SYXX, what are you referring to? The Black Sox scandal, the flu pandemic? 'Splain.
