Dead Locke in the coffin reminded me of Jack's dad in the coffin in season 1. Both Locke and Christian now have been seen on the island yet both are dead. Is this why Jacob hides in the statue... because his shapeshifter enemy smokey lurks on the island trying to kill him?
I agree that Smokey is "Esau". Smokey was the first to influence the French vessel. Smokey intimidated the Losties the first night they arrived. Smokey has been influencing Locke almost from the beginning. I find it odd that Locke saw Smokey as something beautiful, when describing it to Ecko. Ecko replied, "that is not what I saw."
Ever since Eko was murdered, I've said I thought the only thing Smokey was "judging" was a person's willingness to follow Smokey. Eko? Not easily manipulated. Locke? Easily manipulated.
Thinking back I wonder if the Richard who gave Locke Sawyer's file (which led to Sawyer murdering TMFT for Locke) was actually Esau.

Have we seen other cases of Smokey impersonating someone who is still alive? Abbadon maybe, when he visited Hurley? Remember we saw the smoke under the door when he left.
