I came across a couple of stories featuring lost. The TV guide article may only be at this address for a couple of days.

TV Guide Feature 7-25-06

This one is from a Star Trek site and has an interview with JJ Abrahms and he is asked this about doing Star Trek: "Do you feel any pressure taking on such a beloved franchise?"
Abrahms answer:
"I feel respectful of it. Fans of Lost don't compare to fans of Star Trek, but working on Lost gives us a view into how important it is to respect the fans." The Star Trek article has a link to the TV Guide article above as well.

The TV Guide article discusses whether Lost is Sci-Fi or not. I haven't read it yet, but wanted to get this out there while the link still works.

Aw, bugger! I stopped in the store on the way home from work and impulse-bought the TV Guide at the checkout. You scooped me! There are 4 different covers; I got the one with Terry. You have a bettter thread name than the one I was gonna put anyway. Razzer

Anyway, I scanned in the article. Did minimal editing, but it's readable. Here's the whole thing. Only disappointing part is they ask JJ for a hint and he says Desmond's not dead. Must've interviewed him way before Desi came back.

For the first time anywhere, Lost cocreator 1.1.
Abrams tells TV GUIDE about his thrilling new
enterprise BY SHAWNA MALCOM
J.J. Abrams, the man behind Lost, Alias
and "Mission: Impossible llI," is about
to add another sci-fi classic to his
resume. Paramount recently handed the
40-year-old writer-producer-director the
reins to one of its most revered projects:
the next Star Trek film. Abrams will
produce the movie with Lost cocreator
(and fellow Trekker) Damon Lindelof.
Abrams recently called from his Los
Angeles-area home, where he was
hanging with kids (and budding sci-fi
fans) Henry, Gracie and baby August,
to chat about sci-fi, the third season of
Lost and his "incredible" plans for the
starship Enterprise.

Whkh s::::i~fi ~hows had the biggest
on you as a kid? As much as it
was sci-fi, The Twilight Zone was the
most impactful because the approach
was humanistic and allegorical. And I
was always a fan of Star Trek.
Did you have a favorite Twilight Zone
episode? The pilot, "Where Is Every-
body?" starring Earl Holliman. He was
alone in the town, and it turned out he
was being used as a guinea pig in an
Air Force experiment.

Which sci-fi shows do you consider
influences on your own work? I loved
The Prisoner, which was a very odd sort
of hybrid of sci-fi, mystery and charac-
ter, and certainly there are elements of
The Prisoner in both Alias and Lost. The
prisoner was a guy constantly wonder-
ing where the hell he was. And there
was some kind of agency that seemed
to be in control of his destiny, and that
was clearly a theme in Alias. And if
there's any constant motion on Lost, it's
the nod that we're giving to Rod Serling
and The Twilight Zone.
Is it true Lost's credits were designed as
an homage to The Twilight lone? Yeah,
I did it on my laptop. That's why I did it
in black and white. Even the sound-it
was definitely different from Twilight
Zone, but certainly in the vein of it.
Do you consider Lost", scHi Sh(:ilNt It was
sort of Damon's and my secret that it
was a sci-fi show. We certainly never
presented it that way. When we created
it, conventional wisdom was that sci-fi
on major networks didn't exist. The X-
Files was seen as an anomaly. So we
kept it to ourselves in the beginning. If
we had pitched Lost as a sci-fi show, it
wouldn't have gotten made.
'What do you think of the state of sci~fi
011 TV today? There's certainly a lot
more on than there was a couple years
ago. I'm a fan, so the more the better.
Do you thing Lost’s focus on character-
driven stories has changed the Wsd~fi is done on TV? If we've had influ-
ence, it's a wonderful thing, and if we
can be a show that inspires people to
tell stories that are character-based,
then that's a happy by-product of doing
the show. But character-driven isn't
sci-fi, it's just good storytelling.
Will you have time to be involved in
Lost's third season? I definitely look to
be more involved this season, certainly
more than I was last season [when
directing "Mission: Impossible III"]. I
look forward to directing an episode,
and I'm planning on writing some.
What can you tell us about the new
season? A lot of the season's already
figured out, and it's incredible. The
stories are amazing.

C'mon. Give us something. Desmond
will definitely be back. He's not dead.
How exciting is it to find yourself in
charge of resuscitating the Trek
franchise? It's sort of surreal but won-
derful. I'm producing and may direct.
Which of the Star Trek series were you a
fan of? The original, and I thought Next
Generation was terrific. I didn't really
get into Deep Space or Enterprise.

What about Voyager? Not so much. Do
you O'\Nr. St&.r Trek DVDs? Oh, yeah.
[Laughs] I have every DVD of every
Star Trek episode from every series. I
haven't seen every episode of every
series, but I certainly know it well
enough to be working on the movie.
When Paramount asked you to be
involved in the film, did you immediately
say yes? Not exactly. There have been
10 films and all these different series,
so it was a question of finding out what
they were anticipating. But it became
clear pretty quickly that they were in a
really open frame of mind. Then it
became, "Hell, yeah!"
It's been reported that the film will
focus on Kirk and Spack's early days
and include their meeting at Starfieet
Academy. You've said that WOlS not
entirely accurate. What parts are? I think
we have an incredible story, but we've
sort of promised each other we
wouldn't talk about the specifics yet.
But I can say that we're actively
working on it, we're in the middle of
breaking the story, and
it's coming along great. I'd be
happy to start sooner than
Paramount thinks, but not a
moment before it's ready.
the shroud of secrecy?
It's way premature. Anything I
say, people will read into it and
make assumptions. But
we have an incredible beginning of a
really dramatic story, and it very much
honors the canon of Star Trek. On the
other hand, it won't be like anything
you've seen before.
Do you feel any pressure taking on
such a beloved franchise? I feel re-
spectful of it. Fans of Lost don't com-
pare to fans of Star Trek, but working
on Lost gives us a view into how
important it is to respect the fans.
Why do you think Star Trek Cil:mtiril..leS
to fascinate? It was incredibly smart
television. The original series and Next
Generation were about somethinghuman
nature and the idea of coming up
against the unexpected and the often
terrifying. It was a good story that hap-
pened to be science fiction. When I
watch episodes with my 7 -year-old
son and 6-year-old daughter and see
them so vitally respond to a show that
was made the year I was born-it's not
because it takes place on a spaceship.
What endures isn't a genre, it's charac-
ter and emotional connection.

Lost's Sci-fi
ROOTS

J.J. Abrams isn't the only Trekker on the Lost
staff. Here, cocreator Damon Lindelof and
executive producer Carlton Cuse discuss the
classics they loved.
THE TWiliGHT ZONE "One of the things
Twilight Zone did most effectively," says
lindelof, "was made you think you were
watching one thing and only in the last three
minutes did you realize you were watching
another thing."
STAR TREK "It wasn't just people beaming
down to other planets," Cuse says.
"Philosophical and moral issues were
embedded in the stories." Sound familiar?
Well, the Lost- Trek connection goes only so
far. "The secret to the characters on Lost is
they're not static," Cuse says. lindelof points
to Lost's locke. "Spock was always Spock,
Kirk always Kirk. But locke is not the same as
when we started."
THE STAND "One of my biggest influences
was 'The Stand,'" says Cuse of Stephen
King's 1978 novel. "The brilliance was the
way it took a sci-fi premise and told a
character story. The premise was engaging,
but what really allowed the novel to sustain
itself were the characters."
STAR WARS "Sawyer," says Lindelof, "is
very much modeled on Han Solo, who was
modeled on every great Western character,
every outlaw who has to eventually defend the
town. It got to the point last season when
Sawyer was getting soft, like Han Solo did by
the time 'Return of the Jedi' came around. So
we had to get back to the outlaw Sawyer."

TERRY O'QUINN
UNLOCKS LOCKE

What's yourfavoritB fan reac-
tion? I like when they argue,
"What's Locke's problem? Is he
evil or not?" That's all good. At
least they're feeling something.
What's the most chaHenging part
of the role? Accepting that
anybody wears his heart on his
sleeve to the extent he does. I'ma
lot more skepticalthan Locke. He
seems to get his l1eart broken
every other weele.
I get tired of it. [Laughs] He's
the world's biggest sucker,
bless his heart. Hejust wants to
love something and have faith
in something, and

he keeps getting it wrong. I
miss that first-season
Locke, who hunted boar
and had the answers.
I don't know where he
went,but I miss him and
I hope he comes back.

You folks will love what I've been working on.

Now that we know it IS a sci/fi show ,of course.
My Alien theory cant be true? Ahem...

Have entered a contest to script eps in the fall while Lost is on Hiatus. Just for fun. The rules for this contest are simple. Write a 25-35 page script for the 2 opening acts of season 3. Top 8 get picked to pen a few "fantasy" eps till January. I need proof readers and critics.
What? Sounds like Filmfodder people? Cool. Anyone interested?

Namaste, Eric Gunn.

Thanks people!

I'll appreciate any constructive criticism, and any other commentaries for that matter. lol!!!

Who has not read a few books and thought..."I'd like to try that!" Only to start and stop after the first writers block or the first negative comment...What the heck, I'm trying. Over at the fuselage, there's a whole thread where you can read scripts, so I have an idea how to structure it. (An Idea remember that Smiler

I can tell you that it's based on spoilers leaked and that the newly cast "Juliet" character is introduced in Act II as well as the Pala Ferry. (And perhaps, perhaps another Island. I am thinking of ending Act II on the Pala Ferry. Act III would be when we get to see the Others living quarters, where ever that may be. But another Island...eheheheh Wink)

Act I, or the seaon opening shot is a Kate flashback were the new characters Amanda/Amelia? and Kate's possible pre/post Tom love interest are introduced. It's in Tallahasse Florida and she will cross paths with Sawyer and Jack at a bus station, where they will go off in different directions, end of Act I....(In my mind, Sawyer has finished a con and is heading to Tampa for the job he mentions in an ep ,and Jack is just going to enjoy spring break or on vacation. I dont have to explain that in the script, thank God, rotfl)

Got you's interested yet? I'll try to get a rough draft up by wednesday or thursday.

Hurling my man! I posted your thread up at the fuselage about the TV guide revelation Lost was a sci/fi show for comments. I credited you where it was due Smiler But got Mod-Edited for content and copyright law violations!(TV guide being a third party blablabla lawyer mumbo jumbo) Just want to give the Mod here a "heads up". No offence Hurling, great find and thanks for posting.

I'm also writing a total fantasy arc on what Alvar Hanso originally intended THF/TDI to be used for,(Based on TDI 1975 Sri Lanka Orientation video) and the importance of his involvment in weapons dealings during WWII to explain his radical change in attitude. To that is a sub arc tying in the story (In diary format that Alvar finds snooping around) of Magnus Hanso and the accidental discovery of the Island via the Blackrock shipwreck. That's going up at the fuselage, a gift to my good friend AndyLekker.

Yeah, I got spare time. Got a nice compensation check for the leg. Namaste Eric Gunn.

Thanks, dude, but I'm a woman. Smiler

Copyright infringement!?!?!?! Horrors!! I've never done that before! Red Face Wink Big Grin
IDC, I'm still annoyed at TV Guide for the 6 mos I had a subscription (supported my niece's school or something) and
1) many listings were wrong;
2) they didn't have enough grids for the whole day or for enough channels;
3) I couldn't see the stupid thing without a magnifying glass (my sub ended the week before they went large-page);
4) they didn't have the nice long ep descrips like they used to.
So I've got 2 words for them, and youse know what they are. Razzer

I was surprised too because I'm friends with a few mods at the Fuse and I saw quotes not interfered with... Bailey's Dad told me the problem is they need a link to go with the article. It cant be reproduced anywhere else without proper consent from the 3rd (turd?!) party, namely TV guide.

They misspelled "hiatus" and didn't leave a space between "a part."

There, I'm qualified for everything except actual content.

LMFAO!!! I didnt even spot those errors. Yep, you can proof read me anytime dear Smiler

The only catch is you have to buy a special screenwriting program, basically the same as what the Lost writing team are using, to make the scripts "valid". Then there's copyrights laws....At least there's a lawyer on my side of the family. It's a headache getting going, but I want to persue this as a hobby, regardless of the outcome.

P.S."They posted a link where you can download a pirated version of the said software...right on their website........sigh"
