Now that Eko's secret tree factory has been reveiled as a Church, its time for its own thread.

What exactly to you think Eko has in mind with this church? Discuss.

I think that Eko is still repenting the murders he committed. Building a church is his way of getting closer to god, and I'm sure he is hoping to bring back or lead other losties to god.
It's also another example of what Bernard was complaining about--by building a church, Eko is showing that getting off the island is not his priority. He is embracing the situation he is in and trying to heighten his spirituality.
Not all that interesting, imho...

I don't see the significance of a church. Unless something is going to be discovered or revealed in the buildig of it.

Sometimes a church is a church. Like Pen said, Eko probably is going to use it to pray, sing songs, collect offerings.

Continues his thing of "being" a preacher. Told Charlie he was a preacher, likes the Bible. Builds a church so people can be saved and give offerings.

Eko agreed with Charlie ... Bernard said he wanted to build the sign to get 'saved' ... Eko said people are 'saved' in different ways

Man they aren't gonna be on the island for that long that they need to resort to old fart activities as such.

They said it was a church, not a fire station or VFW hall.

Are you kidding? What else do you use a church for?

Obviously for continuing an underground drug smugling operation. That CR 4-81516-23 42 sells like hotcakes in the US blackmarket!

Perhaps Eko will be able to channel the mysterious forces of the island and heal people in his church.

It's just another definate tie-in with the religious--or religion-related--undertones of the show.

It may have some specific purpose in the future, but I can already see Rose, Charlie, and maybe even Locke as regular Island church-goers.

I don't know. Maybe it's being built for the Others to burn down.

I'm still not convinced it's a church. Bernard pressed Eko as to what they were building but Charlie was the one to say that they were building a church.

Last we saw, Eko wouldn't tell Charlie what he was building either. For all we know Charlie assumed it would be a church so that's what he told Bernie.

well since he was a drug dealer and did other bad things like that, I think he has become very greatful and religious and wants to apoligize for his sins, etc.

Maybe he's just conning Charlie into helping him build a house.

Yes, because lying and conning are both trademarks of Eko's personality

I believe Eko ordained himself as a Catholic priest.

when he visited Henry and confessed to killing the 2 people on the island he did it to prepare himself for receiving the Sacrament of Holy Orders which is ordination. And I think when he cut his beard it was a symbolic tonsure which would permit him to act in the capacity of a priest.
Tonsure:
"A sacred rite instituted by the Church by which a baptized and confirmed Christian is received into the clerical order by the shearing of his hair and the investment with the surplice.(a surplice is the loose fitting garment worn at mass) The person thus tonsured becomes a partaker of the common privileges and obligations of the clerical state and is prepared for the reception of orders. The tonsure itself is not an ordination properly so called, nor a true order. It is rather a simple ascription of a person to the Divine service in such things as are common to all clerics."

That's still a pretty whacked form of Christianity.

It all matters very little in the end, however, because apparently "God can't see the island"...maybe a church'll get the big guy's attention (or maybe it'll attract "His" attention, and that can't be good.

I give the church two days at most. There's one thing Dharmatologists hate more than trying to escape the island, and that's worshiping a god that isn't theirs. and no they're not secret skin doctors.
