Well, well, well. It looks like the "someone was already there" theory holds water -- sorta.
You can read all about this week's Major Twist in the latest edition of Key Points: Key Points from "Raised by Another" For me, this was one of those episodes that lulled me to sleep for a while. But it certainly got my attention in the closing moments. Let's hope -- no, PRAY -- the writers stay on the island for a while. |

Trust, I too admit to napping through some of the ep last night.
Sometimes people don't show up on flight manifests - they could be a last minute, standby person or have some other circumstance. More later. |

Or, it could be an EVIL ISLAND INTERLOPER

Evil Island Interloper, or alien? There have already been references to the "black rock", and Claire found that black liquid substance in the bottom of the crib. What else could it be but the black oil alien from the X-Files. I just know Mulder and Scully are going to paddle up to shore any day now.

Here's the thought that my daughter and I had last night.... Ethan is Danielle's long lost son Alex. Hmmm. That would explain how he got on the island and he's also about the right age for a kid who's been on the island for 16 years (assuming he was a teenager when he 'landed'). It probably means he's crazy, too.

hufnagle and robynware: Welcome!
I like the alien virus angle. Maybe Krycek will pop up in a later episode And the Ethan/Alex angle is VERRRRY interesting. It would make sense, too. Or ... maybe Rousseau didn't kill her husband. Maybe he left and he took Ethan/Alex with him to another part of the island. Okay, it's a reach. |

Did Locke actually have only one eye in Claire's first dream? Or was one black and one white, like those stones? I'm too lazy to check.

Yeah, it looked like a blacked-out eye, but it may very well have been one one black stoen and one white stone.
I have to admit, I'm kind of behind on the black stone/white stone thing. If I remember correctly, we've seen (or heard) of the stones on the following occaions: * In Danielle Rousseau's original distress call she refers to the "black rock." * Jack pockets the stones he finds on one of the dried-out corpses. * Sayid asks Danielle about the black rock but doesn't discover much. Perhaps the maps he stole from her will reveal more? * And, finally, Claire *may* have seen Locke with stone-eyes in her dream. Am I missing any? |

I. Don't. Like. Jack. Did I mention I don't like Jack? His bedside manner is deplorable, and he completely lost me when he calmly watched one person being tortured to get the asthma medication for another. Most unethical. His conversation with Claire about the sedatives was so insensitive I would have run, too. As one doctor to another, get a clue, kid. Or is he supposed to be a walking clich about surgeons? Who knows.
Speaking of Claire, she lost me by the completely unconvincing way she let herself be pushed around by that psychic ("Don't give up the baby! You Must Raise that Childe Yourself......oh wait, you should let it be adopted after all. Take those tickets and fly to SF.") WHY does she go along? It boggles the mind. Ah, and the clichs. The clich deadbeat Dad, the clich adoptive couple with the clich babyhungry gaze. They were all sidekicks, but they could have been interesting. Instead, more of the same. Why doesn't the action stay on the frickin' Island? There is something almost tantalizing about those scenes. ONLY those scenes. |

I admit I missed a portion of the middle of the episode, and haven't read TN1's recap yet.
There's no way for the audience or the castaways to ever find out what the psycic (argh! I can't spell tonight!) knew or didn't know, and that irritated me. So, in the end, what difference does it make what he knew or saw or didn't know or see? And the sudden importance of Claire's child, in the scheme of things. What? It would have been nice to have hints of this in past episodes. High point scene: Hurley approaching Sawyer the *right way* - not by insulting, accusing, or otherwise being a jerk to him, just laying out the facts and treating him like a human being, unlike Jack, Kate and Sayid, etc. I like Hurley. Is Locke on the good or bad side? I tend to think, since he had the one black and one white eye in Claire's dream, that he's a wild card. I think he IS sinister, in that he does what he wants, and we don't know what his purpose is, or more to the point, what HE thinks his purpose is, on the island. I'm sure there's more I was thinking of, but it's getting late, and I can't think straight anymore. Talk to you later, all! (and welcome to the new folks!) PS Just remembered what else I wanted to add. I was soooo relieved at the absence of Kate in this one, but the downer was, no Jin or Sun. Awww. Will we ever find out Jin's side of the story, and how Sun knows herbal medicine? [This message has been edited by Ittot (edited 12-03-2004).] |

quote: Well, there was the black and white bakgammon pieces that Locke was showing to Walt very early on. I think that was the first reference. It just seems to be enough of a pattern now that, thinking back, I wondered if Locke's eyes in that dream were actually black and white. |

I thought this was a decent episode, particularly the much-anticipated revealing of the extra castaway living among them. I thought it funny that he was the 47th person. 47 is a key number in JJ Abrams' other series, Alias, as it was in Star Trek before that.
As for JM115's questions about why Claire would follow the psychic's advice, I think it came down to a matter of having nothing better to do. She definitely seemed like a follower in her flashback. She was not certain about anything at any point. Since she had screwed up the local adoption, she may have felt the US one was her only way. Or possibly they were offering more money. I'm looking forward to seeing what Ethan does next week. |
