I learned about Thoth though an entry about Ra equaling Richard Alpert.
“Thoth gradually became seen as a god of wisdom, magic, and the measurement, and regulation, of events, and of time. He was thus said to be the secretary and counselor of Ra, and with Ma'at (truth/order)” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thoth I'm also going with Matthew Abaddon = Ma’at even though this figure is sometimes personified as a goddess. |

You neglected to mention that he had a shrine in Abydos and that he was involved in science and magic. I think this is extremely significant. Also the greek equated him with Hermes and one of his symbols is the Caudecus (figured prominently to the left in my avatar)

That is awesome! Thanks for posting it. I find that this season (perhaps because they're so much more forthcoming with answers to the new questions that pop up) I don't have the drive to check the various Lost sites for theories, so this forum has become my bible for Lost references. Who's with me here? |

Other Lost forums and Lost theory sites are going mad for the ancient Egypt references in relation to the temple, outside the temple, and smokey etc.
For me I think these references are so blatent and so obvious that they are pointless to keep banging on about like the other forums do. We know the Island moves, we know things could be picked up and deposited on the Island. I think the old artifacts and temple etc only prove the age of the island or the age of it's previous or indeed current occupants (e.g. Richard). I think it would be a bit convenient and silly if this all came down to something which has already been done to death in Stargate, I would be seriously devastated. |

Really? I guess one of the things I've always liked about Lost is how highbrow it can be, with the literary references, obscure historical references and the interplay of mythologies. Having never watched Stargate (I assume you mean the tv show?), I don't know how much this has been covered, but since Neil Gaiman's "American Gods" I've enjoyed seeing writers twist well-known mythology into modern situations. And I think Lost has done it very well. I especially like that they've left it in the background, with heiroglyphics and random images, instead of a central narrative point. For me, I'd like to see more. Much more. |

Yeah that is what I am like I guess. As soon as I saw the symbols and the resulting theories springing up I instantly thought "I hope Lost is not going that way!". It would be a crying shame in my opinion.
I understand logic and reasonable science was lost a long time ago, but I think all this Ra, Ancient Egypt stuff is a step too far. Maybe the others are ancient Aryans which is a theory distorted by the Nazis? Anyway I hope not! |
