Why would Ben leave the island only to desparately want to return. Initially it seemed as if he was exiled by Jacob. But we learned later that Christian said he told Locke to move the island. That tells me that Ben intentionally deceived Locke and turned the FDW so he could leave the island, but why? He wants to stay and he wants to get back.

Ben seemed pretty shocked when Keemy killed Alex. One of the few times I think he has shown genuine emotion by the way. He then murmed that "He changed the rules", which made no sense to Sawyer and Locke in the house, but I think it was at that point that Ben decided to leave. I think Ben took John Locke's place, turned the FDW so he could go to the real world, because of his intent to kill Charles Widmore's daughter

Why believe that Christian actually does speak for Jacob? Maybe Christian is - or is a representative of - whatever Jacob needs help from.

Ben doesn't know that Locke talked to Christian, rather than to Jacob himself. Ben didn't deceive Locke in this case.

For all we know, Ben could travel off the island in the same way that Tom, Richard, and Ethan could. Surely he didn't have all those clothes and passports hidden away for nothing.
