Captain, you were right on the tip of my tongue to call for help, just behind Dauntless, Hurling and Alais, to accompany me to Washington state.

Actually, the Park Service is paying for my move so all I need to do is point fingers at the movers while sipping a cold Guiness.

But thanks for the offer. Oh, that wasn't an offer. You were backing up faster than Secretariat ran a furlong. Fair weather friends!

Congratulations PageCarl! What a splendid place to work! And it sits in the cradle of the micro brewery. Perfect.

I believe I will eventually end up in the Great Northwest again.

And now you will have someone to visit for a trip on the ferry over to Victoria!

It's an open invitation to visit Olympic National Park.

MAZEL TOV! I am really happy & excited for you. I'm very good at unpacking - can I assume you keep your bowling gear under the kitchen sink so the golf clubs will fit in the pantry?
Looking forward to hearing about your new social life.

Hurling, can I take that as an offer to help me unpack? Feel free to be in Port Angeles on or about October 17th. As a guy, I accept my ineptitude and accept any assistance. Since I have been living in a hovel, I have essentially tripled my room count and have no idea how to spread things out. Going from no true bedrooms to a pair of true bedrooms will be an adventure. Tell me again what that second bedroom is for?

Social life? Kind of like the bedrooms, this will be a new thing.

I do need to come up with a new moniker. Nothing thus far seems to fit.

Thanks for your congrats!

?????Carl

Love to, but I don't think I can get permission for that. Wink Anyway, there don't seem to be any flights from here to there. I'd have to go to Seattle and have Jack's Girl drive me out. (Although I had such a horrible day at work, I'm ready for an escape. But tonight is the Jewish New Year, so I have 2 days of partying ahead of me - and just finished 3 days of birthday partying. Life is much more relaxing without work.)

The 2nd bedroom is a walk-in closet, with a smaller closet inside for anything you want to keep out of sight.

You may want to stock it with a bed (queen-size) for visiting relatives or friends without benefits. (Futons & sofa beds are notoriously painful and should only be purchased if you DON'T want company.) It is perfectly acceptable to use the extra bed as a table, but you should store lightweight objects that can be bundled up in the blanket and tossed in the corner when company comes. (Note that you will need an extra clean blanket for said company.) This is optional though. You may find it more important to keep your primary bedroom clutter-free (to impress the friends WITH benefits), which means your 2nd bedroom will look like a disaster area, so you can just keep the door closed.

Oh, no. Party 'till the cows come home! After all, who needs work.

So explain this "friends with benefits" thing? Does that mean I need to contribute to their 401k? (yes, it's been awhile).

And a queen bed in the EXTRA room? They get a bigger bed than me?

Jeez. These are tough rules. I obviously need some help!

Oh, dear. I'm thinking "?????Carl" might be the appropriate new name.

You should already have a queen or king bed for yourself! Please tell me you're not sleeping in a twin. I had a much higher opinion of you.......
OK, damage control. Get yourself a new queen bed (pillow-top mattress) and put the old one, which I hope is a full, in the spare room.

I wonder if I can send the guys from Queer Eye over to help you.

Okay, busted. I admit to being a bit overdramatic. I do have a queen. A king is a bit large for several reasons. Now, on the other hand, due to my current cramped conditions, I have no headboard.

When I "moved out" I got rid of much of my accumulated "stuff" so I could fit into smaller, much smaller, digs. Now it is time to regrow my household accesories. My real need is for a good dresser, one with rollers on the drawers. And you to help me unpack.

Actually having a closet will be a nice touch. No, I don't have one now.

I have much more sporting equipment than kitchen and house furniture. Yet I find it somewhat difficult to sleep in my kayaks.

And finally, the gay guys I know deem me marginally acceptable. The gay women love me. The story of my life!

Headboards are overrated - they just make a lot of noise when they get bumped against the wall. Makes your neighbors jealous. But they can be a nice decoration. I recommend a solid one, rather than brass bars or one with bookshelves - doesn't hurt as much when you bang your head against it.
It'd be good to have a dresser so you don't have stacks of underwear on the floor.
You are rather knowledgeable about all this, aren't you? I should think that would be a turn-on. I haven't been single in a long time, but I'm sure if a guy walked into a bar and said, "I'm a little tired from furniture shopping," I'd be all over him.

Cleaning tip: keep a can of Lysol or Clorox wipes under the bathroom sink. Makes it easy to clean up the toilet & sink when company comes over.

With 16 replies and 200-plus views of this thread, can you imagine the disappointment of all those people who tuned into this thread only to find it to be home improvement lessons for Carl?

Should I apologize?

Well, what else does the thread title suggest? And that's what you asked for! Do you want to post pics of me unpacking your stuff? We can get SKM325 or Joshanda to photoshop some up.

Fine, tell us then - are you taking your current vehicle or getting a new one? What kind of vehicle do you drive, do you still have a truck & a motorcycle? How will you move yourself, will you ship the truck & ride the bike? (I think most people would find the opposite more practical, but that's not always the most fun, is it?)

Well, Carl's on the move" COULD mean lots of things. For instance, had I eaten an over abundance of peanut butter and required some medicinal assistance, that could be considered on the move. Or if I was actually able to find a woman in Page? Oh, no, that's "making a move" or "on the make". Or how about if I went out dancing? No, that's "busting a move". More likely busting an ankle.

Okay, details you want.

I'm driving my car from Page to Port Angeles. It's only about 1,350 mile so no big deal. It's actually a bit shorter since my new boss wants me to stop over in Seattle to meet everyone at some regional Park Service meeting they are having. Since I'm getting paid for the drive I need to drive a minimum of 350 miles a day before getting a hotel.

I drive a yellow Toyota FJ. It will be the one with the yellow mountain bike hanging off the back.

I've sold all but one of my motorcycles, which I'm taking with me. The park is moving me so they will haul it for me. I just need to wait for them to pick up my meager belongings so I can get on the road. I have sold most everything I have with the intent of starting over. Hence the need for house furnishing advice (thank you very much, Hurling, by the way). It is sad to say that I have probably triple the volume of tools and camping gear than furnishings.

Since you won't come help me unpack, SKM is freshly married and Dauntless won't leave the flatlands to come visit, I need to create a mature habitat to lure in unsuspecting earthy girls. I know. No frat furnishings, clean towels, toilet seat down and a potato peeler.

I expect to be on the road on Oct. 13 or 14 and should be at my new house on Oct. 17, although my stuff won't get there for several days after so I'll be living in a sleeping bag. It will give me time to hunt for that perfect picture. I have one I like so I only need one more.

You could do the "second bedroom" thing, or...for the same cost of a new bed (matresses are outrageous) and furnishings, you could create a home theater - projector, screen, sectional sofa, and a recliner - a perfect place for watching movies or your favorite TV show. And if you put up dark curtains along the wall, you could use the area behind the curtains for extra storage space.

Nemo, that is a great idea. I have been trying to figure out how to integrate a computer table into the second bedroom idea. Creating a home theater room would allow me to connect my computer into my television.

Once I actually get to the house, the home theater idea is on top of my list.

Congratulations Carl. No apology necessary. Remember The Truman Show? This could be The Carl Show. Who knows in this goofy world maybe someone will want to copyright your life and you'll become a legend...and maybe rich too.

Have a safe trip, drive carefully.

Travel tip (I believe this is in the Talmud, and to the best of my knowledge, it always works): Before you leave, put a few dollars in your pocket. Keep it there the whole trip. When you arrive at your final destination, give it to a charity.

Officially and for the record, I am now in Port Angeles, Washington working as park engineer for the National Park Service in Olympic National Park. I even have a Washington license and plates so I am essentially a local. For those of you who need a pop culture reference, I am one hour east of Forks, of Twilight fame. Every time I drive to the west side of the park I stop in Forks for a bathroom and coffee break.

It is beautiful here. My job is wonderful and affords me the opportunity to be out in the wilderness often. On my first trip out, on my third day at work, I saw fifty or more elk and two black bear.

All is good!

Oh, and now I wear a uniform, grey and green, badge and all.
